Ski & Sail Svalbard

Explore Svalbard from an expedition sailing yacht

Join us on a backcountry ski touring expedition in the remote Svalbard, located at 78º between the North Pole and Northern Norway. Experience breathtaking scenery and extraordinary wildlife, including polar bears, walruses, whales, reindeer, and birds. Mountains rise straight from the sea, surrounded by stunning glaciers and sea ice. Each day of the journey, we will set sail and anchor in a new bay. The Moondance and its expert team are fully equipped for sailing and skiing adventures in West Spitsbergen.

Experience a variety of ascents and descents under the midnight sun, giving us unmatched flexibility throughout the trip. Intermediate backcountry skiers and splitboarders are welcome aboard Moondance for an unforgettable week of skiing and sailing in Svalbard.

The Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard is situated to the north of the Norwegian mainland, latitudes 74N to 81N, between the Greenland Sea and the Barents Sea.
”The northern end of the ocean” mentioned in the 12th century Icelandic chronicles, it is nearest it is feasible to sail and land to the North Pole, the starting point for many of the greatest adventurers that raced to reach the northernmost point on Earth. It remains one of the remote frontiers of the planet.

The main goal is explore the Finnmark Alps, Stjernøya and Seiland which offer endless possibilities. Encounters with other skiers and sailors are infrequent; chances are, we’ll have the fjords to ourselves. This rarity distinguishes it from other parts of Northern Norway.

Your journey will start with a flight to Alta, where daily flights connect through Oslo. Conveniently, our dock is just 5 minutes from the airport. Depending on conditions, we may also embark or conclude our journey in Oksfjord, a mere 2 hours away from the airport. As the departure date nears, we will keep you informed of any updates.

This year’s Svalbard Ski and Sail trip starts in Longyearbyen on Svalbard. There are usually multiple daily flights between Longyearbyen and Oslo, Norway.

If you choose to only participate in the boat portion of this trip, you must arrive in Longyearbyen at the latest on Day 4 (see Itinerary tab). We will be boarding the boat at around 4:00 pm. Unfortunately in 2023 both airlines servicing Longyearbyen chose to cancel flights on Saturdays, which requires booking a hotel room for an extra night. This last night accommodation is not included in your trip fees, as it was unanticipated when we scheduled our 2023 trips. We recommend Mary-Ann’s Polarrigg, Basecamp Spitzbergen or Gjestehuset 102 as great options for that last night.

There is an optional 3 days of ski touring offered (see above Itinerary tab for dates). If you arrive in Longyearbyen on Day 1 then you can participate in all three pre-sail ski tours, but you can also arrive later than that if you like. Please advise us of your intentions so we can make hotel bookings and other arrangements.

When you book your return flight, the best option is to book a flight (even a very early one) from Longyearbyen on the last day (see Itinerary tab)

There are convenient bus airport transfers that bring you from the airport to the hotel and also pick up at the hotels before flights. Transfers are not included in the trip fee. LYR is about 4 km from town, so about 7 minutes by taxi and 10-15 minutes by bus depending on hotel (less than 10 minutes from Mary Ann’s where we’re staying). Cost is about 100 NOK pp for a return ticket (170 NOK for return tickets). You can also hire a taxi which costs about 200-300 NOK each way for a minvan. See this web page for details. Don’t worry — the bus is comfortable and extremely convenient with lots of room for passengers, baggage and skis! Did we mention it’s 4 km and less than 10 minutes?

Moondance, a 56ft Koopmans, draws its design inspiration from Dick Koopmans’ sailing ship “De Jager,” winner of the “Round of Britain 2006” and “Cold Handed Cup 2007.” This makes Moondance a truly exceptional vessel, purpose-built for expeditions and the unforgiving Arctic. With its lofty central lounge, comfy accommodations for nine, an array of heaters, a well-appointed bathroom inc. shower, and generous storage, Moondance combines adventure and comfort in one package, promising unforgettable journeys on the high seas.

Based on our experience, guests feel more involved when they can participate in everyday activities on board. We always ask for a flexible and proactive attitude.

Warme groet, Niels
