Sørøya, the fourth largest island in Norway, is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, stunning landscapes, and unparalleled fishing opportunities. Known as the “Land of the Big Fish,” Sørøya is a top destination for sea fishing enthusiasts, offering some of the best fishing experiences in the country. The island is famous for its incredible spring Skrei Cod fishery, which peaks each year in the spring. Sørøya holds the record for the largest ever rod-and-reel-caught fish, a colossal 104lb Skrei Cod.

However, Sørøya offers much more than just cod fishing. It is a premier year-round fishing destination, with opportunities to catch giant Halibut, massive Coalfish, large Plaice, and deep-water species like Wolffish and Redfish. The island’s cold arctic waters support abundant fish populations, attracting anglers from around the globe. DAY ONE

Day 1: Arrival

Upon arrival in Hasvik, the Moondance awaits you in the guest harbour. After unpacking and getting settled in, it’s time for a skipper’s meeting. Here, we will brief you on the plan, discuss everyone’s expectations, and address safety matters. In the evening or after a good night’s rest, we set sail!

DAY TWO - SIX

Day 2-6: Sailing and Spear Fishing

We explore the island of Sørøya from from a unique perspective: the water. The route we follow is packed with highlights and hidden gems where we will Spear and lern the best techniques from Spear Fishing Guide Eiving. Our sailing ship Moondance ensures that you get up close to nature and visit places where no one else goes. Our daily program starts after a delicious breakfast. Before and afterwards, there is plenty of time to relax, hike, sail, visit (cultural) historical sites, fish, read a book, and so on. Usually, we sail each day to end up at a new dock or anchor spot every day.

DAY 7

Day 7: Departure

After breakfast, it’s time for a hug. We assist you with a good travel route and then wave you off. On to the next sailing adventure!

How do I get there?

The point of embarkation and disembarkation for this journey is Hasvik Harbour. From 2pm you are welcome on arrival day and at 10 10am we wave you goodbye at departure day. You can easily reach Hasvik airport by flying from Oslo through Alto or Tromso. 

Recommendations for flying to Tromso or Alta
– Google Flights or Skyscanner to find flights and book directly at the Airliner. Norwegian Air or SAS are the most common.

Recommendations for flying from Tromso or Alta to Hasvik
– Wideroe for inland flights

How is life on board?

A sailing trip with Moondance Expeditions is a unique vacation. We are dependent on the elements, which requires a flexible attitude towards the program, the people, and expectations. In principle, we take the lead and initiative in everything. The captain guides you in their choices and asks for input. Based on our experience, guests feel more involved when they can participate in everyday activities on board. We always ask for a flexible and proactive attitude. The space can sometimes feel small, which is why we will regularly check in with you to ensure everything is meeting your expectations.

What is on the menu?
During the journey, we provide a variety of delicious and nutritious dishes to ensure your well-being:

Continental breakfast: includes eggs, fresh bread, fruit salad, and more.
Lunch: either premade sandwiches for onshore excursions or a hot meal.
Dinner: a diverse menu featuring self-caught fish, pasta, curry, traditional dishes, Asian cuisine, and more.
Snacks: assortment of cheese, bars, chips, etc.

Level of the voyage?

This voyage is open to both newcomers and experienced sailors. Our goal is to refine your sailing skills along the route, and we will tailor our approach to accommodate participants at any skill level. We can strike a balance between challenging and more relaxed itineraries. A basic level of fitness is necessary, and participants must be able to swim.

Can I charter the full boat with a group or as a guide?

We offer various collaboration opportunities and discounts for large groups, guides, tour operators / companies, hosts, and special projects. At Moondance Expeditions you can rent Moondance bare boat or as a full charter. We also work with local partners if you want to charter other boats. Please contact us for more information.
